We Live in One of the Sunniest Countries. So Why Are We So Deficient?

3. Clothing coverage. Vitamin D synthesis needs direct UVB on bare skin. Covered arms, legs, and head — common across Indian culture — dramatically reduce the surface area available for synthesis.
4. Air pollution. Smog and particulate matter in cities like Delhi and Mumbai scatter UVB before it reaches skin. A 2019 study found urban air pollution reduces effective UVB exposure by up to 50% — even on clear days.
5. Indoor lifestyle. The average urban professional spends 90%+ of their day indoors. Glass windows block UVB entirely. Sitting next to a sunny window produces zero Vitamin D.
6. Diet provides almost nothing. A typical vegetarian Indian diet delivers less than 100 IU of Vitamin D daily. Adults need 600–800 IU at minimum — and deficient individuals often need 2000–4000 IU therapeutically. Food alone cannot close this gap.
